THE SILVER COAST

The Silver Coast is located in the West Region, a fertile area well known for its vineyards, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Montejunto Mountain embankment. It is graced by nature, by its geography, and morphology. Its privileged location gives the Silver Coast an extremely pleasant climate.

The Silver Coast has it all: golden beaches, lush forests, World Heritage sites, the deep blue ocean, traditions, divine food, good people, glorious weather and more. This is the real Portugal, culture, heritage, hospitality and all within an hour’s drive of Lisbon.

The beauty is not just in its coastline. Behind the plunging cliffs that form a barrier between land and sea is a landscape of orchards and vineyards, of rolling hills and green fields, a place where life is still lived at a comfortable, old-world pace.

Driving North along the coastline from Lisbon one sees how the Silver Coast got its name.

Fine sandy beaches shimmer like silver, as they are washed by the Atlantic Ocean; cliffs, coves and fishing towns dot the coast; orchards, vineyards, and tranquil historic towns and villages pepper the countryside.

THE PERFECT YEAR-ROUND CLIMATE

The Silver Coast is famous for its year-round warm temperatures and wonderfully-refreshing Atlantic breezes, offering a cooling effect against the long hot summers.

SPRING 14 – 18°C (57 – 64°F)
SUMMER 20 – 30°C (68 – 86°F)
AUTUMN 15 – 22°C (59 – 72°F)
WINTER 08 – 15°C (46 – 59°F)

FOOD & WINE

The Silver Coast offers a range of gastronomic experiences; although strongly influenced by the ocean, with numerous recommended fish and shell-fish dishes, there is however something for everyone’s taste. As a perfect accompaniment to the rich gastronomy, the region is home to many superb wines.

The area is considered to be a leading wine producing region in Portugal, and the world.

A long tradition of viniculture defines the habits and the landscape of the West Region, assuming great importance in this land of vineyards and sea.

The area boasts full-bodied, aromatic red wines with excellent alcoholic content.

The wines of the south are lively when young, intense yet well- balanced and with an exquisite bouquet when aged.

The white wines of the north are deliciously fruity.

GOLF WITH A VIEW

The Silver Coast has the greatest variety of golf courses available in Portugal.

The magnificent views and bracing sea breezes, combined with the long hours of sunshine and mild climate make it possible to play on the Silver Coast throughout the year.

Sea and beaches, cliffs and dunes, and constant sunshine define the charms of the coastal area of the “Oeste”. The pleasure of the game is combined with a healthy iodized atmosphere.

Portugal has been named as one of the best European and international destinations for golf.

This area boasts 7 championship golf courses, including Praia d’el Rey, voted best golf course in Europe in 2007.
